Revised CDC Guidelines for COVID Incubation

Incubation, in a medical sense is the phase during which an infection is still developing. The symptoms only become evident at the end of this period. However, an infected carrier can pass the disease to others during this time. This is therefore a critical period when it comes to isolation of suspected cases. The revised CDC guidelines for COVID incubation are essential knowledge in this regard.

Revised CDC Guidelines for COVID Incubation and Quarantine

Incubation periods vary between diseases. For example, influenza takes one to three days to show. While HIV/AIDS may take two to three weeks, even months to develop. Doctors express incubation periods in ranges not absolutes, because the following factors influence timing:

1… How much of the pathogen entered the patient

2… Whether the patient had the appropriate vaccination

3… How rapidly the pathogen replicates in their body

4… How strong and effective their immune system is

Current policy recommends fourteen-day incubation for people with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infections. However, the revised CDC guidelines for COVID incubation indicate 99% of all infections will develop within 10 days of exposure.

The Implications of These Revised Guidelines for Quarantine Policy

The previous 14 day period for COVID incubation was an estimate while scientists got to grips with the process. However the agency has now adjusted it, based on a review of data for hundreds of thousands of cases. This information, live December 2, 2020 reveals 99% of all infections develop within 10 days of exposure.

As a consequence, CDC says quarantine can shorten from fourteen to ten days with valid reasons, but only under the following circumstances:

1… No symptoms were present during ten days daily monitoring

AND / OR

2… A diagnostic specimen has produced a negative result

However and this is important to note, masking and monitoring for symptoms must continue throughout the longer fourteen day period.
